Committee Meeting
The fact that Mr. Slafter's departure for the West at an earlier date than the committee had anticipated, necessitated this mid summer meeting, held at the home of Mr. Robinson.
An earlier date for the Reunion was therefore discussed and October 8th or 10th was decided upon. It was voted however to ascertain Mr. Slafter's latest possible date of going.

Thirtieth Annual Reunion
This year's reunion demonstrated that the reorganized alumni association is successfully solving the problem of the popular reunions. The success of the last three years manifest a revival of interest, which is most gratifying and encouraging and which, it is to be hoped will prove stable. It is all attributable to the harmony in committees, brought about largely by the policy of rotation in office, which seems to have been happily adopted, and the cordial support of the alumni.
Occasion for special celebration was given by the fact that this year marked the fifteenth anniversary of the institution of the free public High School; also that Mr. Slafter was very soon to depart for the West, where he is to make his home, affording thus an opportunity to wish him Godspeed and accord him many expressions of the lore and esteem in which he is held by alumni and friends. It was the forty- ninth anniversary of his entrance as principal of the High School. He was the special guest of the evening and in the course of his address after the banquet delightfully eloquent and reminiscent.
Gen. Thomas Sherwin of the class of '51 before finishing his speech presented a crayon portrait of Mr. Slafter contributed by many of the older alumni of the school. Mr. Joyce fittingly accepted and responded to the presentation. Chas J. Capen, the guest of honor in 1900, was one of the four speakers.
The reception in the lower hall was followed by a banquet by Strachare at which one hundred and ninety eight sat down. At the business meeting the following officers for 1902 were elected.
President- Arthur M. Daniels
Vice President- Frank B. Young
Secretary- Arthur D. Monteith
Treasurer- Frank W. Kimball

Dancing from ten till one o'clock brought to a close the reunion, which in some respects was the most successful ever, held.

The following letter was read:
Dedham Mass. Feb 18, 1916.
Mr. Charles Stearns, President
Dedham High School Alumni Ass'n,
Dedham Mass.
Dear Sir:
It seems to me that on this occasion, the annual meeting of the Association it is most appropriate to call to the attention of the graduates of the high school certain conditions now existing
For a period of about twenty years the School has been represented by various athletic teams that not only acquitted themselves in a gentlemanly and sportsmanlike but also lent prestige to the school, and town alike. The actual participation in athletics by the students competing, together with an enthusiastic interest by the remainders of the school, produced a healthy atmosphere in the class room in the form of inactive ability, which I am afraid is last diminishing in our High Schools today.
Perhaps there have been times when athletes have assumed a position of importance that was far in excess of their real value, but even granting that, is it not better that such be the case than to have excess in other channels due to unoccupied minds outside of the class room.
The climax was reached during the past year, when for the first time since 1895, football was discontinued in the middle of the season and finally the Advisory Board was obligated to recommend the abolition of athletics for the remainder of the school year. In the beginning of athletics in the school and up to the present five years ago, we were able to complete with other schools because athletes had not developed to their position of today through a splendid spirit of self-sacrifice by undergraduates and graduates, teams were trained and instructed and made able to compete with other schools around Boston.
The recognition of the value of properly regulated athletics by other towns has been Manifested by the appointed of physical instructors who not only coach the various High School athlete teams but, vastly more important look after the physical welfare of the students before they enter the High School.
If we are to attach any importance to the physical side of the educational system of the Town, we must have adequate physical instructorl under the direct supervision of the school committee. As a graduate of the school and with fond recollections of the days when Dedham held a position envied by even larger school. I felt it my duty to advise the Association of these conditions as I have found them as a member of the advisory board.
In closing allow me to respectfully suggest that the president of the alumni association be authorized to appoint a committee of thee to take up the matter of physical education with the school committee and report at the next annual meeting of the association in 1917.
Very Truly Yours,
(Signed) William P. Brennan
